Bacon’s Castle

Built in 1665 by Arthur Allen, Bacon’s Castle is the oldest brick dwelling in Virginia and the only existing example of Jacobean architecture in British North America. It became known as “Bacon’s Castle because of the role the home played in Bacon’s Rebellion in 1676; an event that led to the establishment of race-based, lifetime enslavement in the British Colonies.
The original home is preserved along with one of the original dwellings that housed enslaved families and an original smokehouse. The 17th-century garden may be one of the earliest found in North America.
Operated by Preservation Virginia, the site is open Friday through Sunday from March to mid-December. From Memorial Day through Labor Day the site is also open on Mondays. Bacon’s Castle hosts numerous special events throughout the year.
A gift shop and public restrooms are located inside the home.
Tickets required.
