Celebrate the birthday of this War of 1812 hero born in 1775 in Smithfield. Commander of all U.S. military forces in the Norfolk area in 1813, Taylor led the highly successful defense against the British in the decisive Battle of Craney Island. The first notable American victory in our second war for independence, the battle saved the port of Norfolk from enemy control.
