There’s so much to see and experience on the Salty Southern Route, that we suggest you spend the weekend with us. Lodging options vary – anything from RV and campsites to luxury accommodations or top-of-the-line chains – you’ll find something for your style and budget. We’ve even planned out your days if you’d prefer, or you can create your own itinerary. Either way, you’ll enjoy a relaxing, memorable journey in our neck of the woods.
- Day one of your journey will bring you into the area from Route 460 where many of the authentic peanut processors have their operations. Plantation Peanuts in Wakefield is a great example of one and the perfect introduction to the Salty Southern Route.
- Stop for lunch at the iconic Virginia Diner. You can’t travel along 460 without tasting their home-style, authentic southern food.
- If you’d like a different type of culinary souvenir than peanuts, head to the Hampton Roads Winery in Surry County.
- Next stop is the Visitor Center in downtown Smithfield where you can pick up information on all that the town has to offer – peruse the art since the Visitor Center shares its space with the Arts Center @319.
- While exploring the galleries, shops and attractions of downtown Smithfield, check out the “Porcine Parade,” eight life-size statues of market hogs, painted by local artists.
- Enjoy dinner and adult beverages at Wharf Hill Brewing Company, then walk up the street to the Smithfield Ice Cream Parlor for dessert.
- Lodging options in downtown Smithfield include the Smithfield Station, the Smithfield Inn, and Mansion on Main Bed & Breakfast and all the stops in town are within easy walking distance from the lodgers.
- If you’d like to travel a bit further for something even more unique, how about a farm stay at the PandA Homestead in Capron? Collect some eggs, feed the goats and bunnies, fill the duck’s water pools, or shower the pigs in the hot summer months – you’ll really connect with your food source!
- Saturday you’ll explore Surry beginning with Bacon’s Castle, originally built in 1665 and the oldest existing brick dwelling in Virginia. Its name is derived from the fortified role it played in Bacon’s Rebellion.
- Next head to the Surry County Visitor Center, located on the lawn of the historic Courthouse where you’ll learn about the area and pick up coupons and brochures for area businesses.
- Enjoy lunch waterside at the Surry Seafood Company Restaurant and experience stunning views of historic Gray’s Creek.
- Swing by Just for Kicks Cupcakes & More and Meats of Virginia for some sweet treats, exotic jerky, and unique gift items.
- Head back to Smithfield for a relaxing dinner and drinks on the patio overlooking the Pagan River at the Smithfield Station.
- Sunday is all about the Peanut Capital – Suffolk.
- Start with a delicious brunch at the Mod Olive in downtown Suffolk.
Stroll the downtown area, being sure to stop at the Visitor Center, the Planters Peanut Center – and take a selfie with one of downtown Suffolk’s Mr. Peanut statues. - If time allows, swing by the Seaboard Station Railroad Museum or Riddick’s Folly House Museum to learn the history of the area.
- Finish your weekend with a relaxing walk along the scenic trails of the Great Dismal Swamp.
